Akon is a song writer, record producer and R&B singer. Akon's full name is Aliaune Badara Akon Thiam. Akon was born on April 16,1973 in St. Louis, Missouri. He is a Senegalese-American as his parents hail from Senegal which is a country in western Africa. His father, Mor Thiam , is a famous percussionist in their native country of Senegal. Although Akon was born in St. Louis, after borth he resided in Senegal until seven. Between the ages of seven and fifteen he spit his time between Senegal and the United States until he moved to New Jersey full time.
Trouble was the title of Akon's debut album. It was released in 2004. His first single released entitled "Locked Up" is what got others to notice his interesting blend of music. His album Trouble was the very first album to come from his own label, Konvict Music. Right after the dropping of his debut album Akon had his first of many guest appearances on songs. His first guest appearance was on the Young Jeezy song "Soul Survivor" which went quickly up the Billboard chart. Since then Akon has recorded songs with Michael Jackson, Lil Wayne and many others. He has also produced songs on Whitney Houston's comeback album. Akon is also responsible for co writing the chart topping hit "Just Dance" with Lady Gaga. He also produced the track.

In 2006, Akon also started a second record label called Kon Live Distribution through Interscope Records. Akon was also responsible for signing Lady Gaga to his label Konvict Records. His latest album, Freedom, has reached gold status due in part to hit collaborative singles with Kardinal Offishall , Lil Wayne, and Young Jeezy. Akon and Young Jeezy have expressed interest in making a joint album in the future.
