Alice in Chains was one of the most prominent rock bands in the 1990s and is still hailed as one of the great bands in today's current music market. Alice in Chains was based from Seattle, Washington and was formed in 1987. The band's musical style is primarily grunge, but they also incorporate acoustic elements and heavy metal composition. Alice in Chains was part of the Seattle grunge explosion in the early 1990s, along with Nirvana, Soundgarden, and Pearl Jam. The band is one of the most successful rock bands from their era, selling over 17 million albums. The band has spawned two number one albums (Jars of Flies and Alice in Chains), six Grammy award nominations and 11 top ten hits. Layne Staley was the original lead singer of the band and he contributed vocals to three albums and 3 EPs. Other members include Jerry Cantrell, Mike Inez, Sean Kinney and William DuVall. A month before their first debut album, Alice in Chains released an EP entitled "We Die Young", the title track and "It Ain't Like That" appeared on their debut entitled "Facelift". Facelift was also released in 1990. "Man in the Box", was released as a single and the band began to receive critical and commercial success. "Man in the Box" made "Facelift" the first grunge album to reach the top 50 spot on the Billboard 200 chart. Critical and commercial success keep coming the band's way with their breakthrough album "Dirt", released in 1992. "Dirt" spawned five hit singles. "Dirt" has sold over 4 million copies, their highest selling album. The first EP to reach the number one spot on the Billboard 200, "Jar of Flies" was released in 1994 to more critical acclaim. "No Excuses" was the band's most successful single. Alice in Chain's last album with Layne Staley as the lead vocalist, "Alice in Chains", was released in 1995. Layne Staley died suddenly of a drug overdose in 2002 and fellow member William DuVall took over as the lead vocalist, releasing their album, "Black Gives Way to Blue" in 2009.
