About Ani DiFranco
Feminist icon and Grammy Award-winning musician Ani DiFranco has come a long way from covering Beatles songs in bars and clubs. Since her first release in 1990, she has released 18 studio albums and 15 live albums, as well as produced work in other media including film and poetry, started her own record label, and made her name as one of the most celebrated and original artists in the music industry.
Hailing from Buffalo, New York, DiFranco reaches her audience through her folk music, which makes powerful, progressive political statements and challenges stereotype and hypocrisy. She is a resident of New Orleans, Louisiana, and has stated the post-Katrina city as an inspiration. Aside from her music, Ani DiFranco is also a political powerhouse for social change and a huge activist for feminism and women’s rights. She has campaigned actively against nuclear waste and has been deeply involved in presidential campaigning. For her contributions as an activist and as a human, DiFranco is a recipient of the prestigious Woody Guthrie award as well as the “Woman of Courage Award”. As far as musical achievements go, Ani DiFranco has garnered four nominations and one 2004 win for Best Recording Package at the Grammy Awards.
At 19, Difranco moved to New York City to pursue music, where she studied at The New School and performed as often as possible. She released her first album in 1990, choosing not to go with a label, and sold copies of the album from the trunk of her car. She has been busy ever since, in a whirlwind of near-constant touring and recording, and released her most recent album, Red Letter Year, in 2008.
DiFranco has been praised for her power and passion in her live performances, and her music is undeniably best heard live. Her performances have been called “phenomenal”, “intimate”, and “absolutely relatable”. Fans across the globe consider her concerts to be one of the best live performances of any other artist. We look forward to seeing her fame continue to grow and her fan base continue to adore her musical styling for years to come.
