More About Beck

In 1994 MTV was making waves with a video that was as unique in its music as it was in it's visuals. Beck's hit "Loser" took the music world by storm. His release "Mellow Gold" was only a taste of the soon to be creative tour de force that would be changing the music landscape forever. "Odelay" would be released in 1996 showing that Beck had no intention of being a one hit wonder. The album would also show that he would not be happy staying in one place creatively and that he was by no means done experimenting with his own sound. One of the keys to Beck's success is the wide variety of styles and influences that make it into his music. Spawning such hits as "Where it's At" and "The New Pollution", this album proved to be more successful commercially and critically than his previous work. In 1999 Beck would go on to win a Best Alternative Music Performance Grammy for his album "Mutations." The album strayed slightly from the very electronic heavy sound of previous releases and featured older songs that had not been released or even recorded. Beck followed up this album with "Midnite Vultures," which was actually nominated for Best Album during the 43rd Grammys. It was during the supporting tour of this album that Beck's live performance took a noted turn to even higher energy and production values. During the song "Debra," a large bed would actually be lowered onto the stage. Beck would also be joined on stage by a full brass band. Beck has always been known for fiery and energetic live shows that often times end up including other popular musical acts. After the release of "Sea Change," Beck was actually joined on tour by The Flaming Lips, who not only opened the show for him, but would also be Beck's band during his set. One of Beck's more well known stage acts is performing his song "Clap Hands" while his band sits at a dinner table and perform percussion in a style similar to the old Broadway show "Stomp."
