About Coldplay
Coldplay is an alternative rock group founded in London in 1998. They received fame worldwide when their single “Yellow” came out in 2000. Coldplay’s fourth CD release “Viva la Vida or Death & All His Friends” in 2008 has received many Grammy nominations and wins. To this day, Coldplay has sold over 50 million records across the globe. Coldplay was influenced by many different groups and artists, including Radiohead, U2, George Harrison, Johnny Cash, and Muse.
Members of Coldplay include:
Chris Martin, born in 1977, on lead vocals, keyboards and guitar.
Jonny Buckland, born in 1977, plays lead guitar.
Guy Berryman, born in 1978, plays bass guitar.
Will Champion, born in 1978, plays drums, background vocals and miscellaneous other instruments.
Coldplay’s style has been described as alternative rock. They are similar in style to Jeff Buckley and Oasis as well as Switchfoot. Though compared to other artists and groups, there style is still very unique and very much their own. Their songs tend to sound a little sad – and some might say, depressing. There music is very emotional and can touch a person’s soul.
The future of Coldplay is uncertain, as Chris Marten (their lead singer) mentioned in 2008 that he thinks that bands should not keep going past the age of thirty three. He later said that they must continue as if each album is their last one.
Coldplay has covered songs by such artists as Michael Jackson and Johnny Cash.
Coldplay is not afraid of supporting causes that they believe in, and has actively supported the Oxfam’s Make Trade Fair Group and the Amnesty International organization. In 2009, they started supporting Meat Free Monday, which tries to help to slow the change in climate by going without meat at least one day each week. Singer Chris Marten endorsed John Kerry in 2004 and Barack Obama in 2008.
