Country music icon George Strait has announced his final concert go-round but stressed that he does not plan to ride into the sunset after his two-year "The Cowboy Rides Away Tour" ends in 2014.

George Harvey Strait was born on May 18, 1952 and is a very popular country music singer. Strait was born in Poteet, Texas, but was raised in Pearsall, Texas. The family owned a 2,000 acre farm which they worked on in the summer and on the weekends. Amazingly, George's mom left the Straight family and took his sister when poor George was in the third grade, which left his dad to raise him.
In 1971, Strait enlisted in the United States Army and was honorably discharged just 4 years later. The next year later he and his wife welcomed their first baby to the world. George Strait has been known as the "King of Country" for quite a while. His very first single hit was "Unwound" in 1981 and there has been no stopping him since.
Throughout the 1980's Strait had eighteen #1 singles and seven #1 albums including "Ocean Front Property". The following decade Strait continued his success seventeen #1 hits including "Heartland". He was named Artist Of The Decade by the ACM, elected into the Country Music Hall of Fame and also won his first Grammy award.
Strait has been the recipient of the CMA Entertainer of the year and ACM Entertainer of the year between 1989 and 1990. A fact about Strait that maybe you don't realize is that he has been nominated for more CMA and ACM awards than any other artist. He holds the record for the most #1 hits on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts with 44 #1 singles on that chart, which breaks the old record by Conway Twitty.
In 1992 Strait starred in the movie Pure Country which was a huge hit with his fans that support him today. In this movie he portrays a country singer that is tired of the fast life and decides to go off on his own for a while where no one knows who he is.
