About Kanye West
Born in Atlanta on June 8, 1977, but well-known as a Chicago resident, hip hop artist and producer Kanye West has won many awards for his work in the rap and R&B industry. Kanye received four BET Hip Hop awards, two Billboard Hip Hop/R&B awards, three BRIT awards (from the UK), two GQ awards, twelve Grammy awards, five MOBO awards, two MTV Europe awards, two MTV Music awards, one NAACP Image award, one Teen Choice award, two Vibe awards and two World Music Awards in six years.
Kanye West worked as a producer years before getting his own record deal with Roc-a-Fella records in 2002. With his jaw wired shut, he recorded his first CD “The College Dropout” with hit songs like “Through the Wire” and the previously mentioned single, “Jesus Walks.” “The New Workout Plan,” another single from the album, also did well, blasting in health clubs all over Chicago and played repeatedly on music video stations like BET and MTV.
His award-winning albums, 2005’s “Late Registration” and 2007’s “Graduation,” were also embraced by the hip hop and R&B crowd. But it was his most recent album, “808s & Heartbreak” that exposed his fanbase to his more sensitive side where Kanye West rhymed about relationships and used the common recording tool, the vocoder, to bring his album more melody to add to the funk.
Kanye West started the Kanye West Foundation program in 2003, and on June 11, 2009, Kanye West tour gave a free concert to Chicago Public School children encouraging them to stay in school. Fans also bought Kanye West tickets when he completed benefit concerts and fundraisers with the Millions More Movement, 100 Black Men of America, World Water Day and Hurricane Katrina relief organizations.
Kanye West has made a point of fighting for political and social causes, such as outspoken opinions about previous president George W. Bush and recording “Diamonds from Sierra Leone” talking about how dangerous but profitable the diamond industry is in African countries. Kanye West is also one of the few mainstream hip hop artists who has openly rapped about religion as the focus of a single, with “Jesus Walks,” still widely played on Chicago radio.
