About Morrissey
Affectionately known as “Mozza” to his fans, his real name is Stephen Patrick Morrissey. He has been writing songs, singing in his unmistakable voice and performing for over thirty years. While many pop stars burn out after their fifteen minutes in the spotlight, Morrissey keeps on winning fans and getting good press.
Morrissey’s Musical Beginnings
Best known as the lead singer of The Smiths, Morrissey began his career in a punk rock band called The Nosebleeds, which mercifully broke up in 1978. In order to pay the bills, Morrissey found employment as a hospital porter. Some fans think that seeing human suffering is where he began to seriously begin acting for humans and animals.
But music called Morrissey back in the early 1980’s. The Smiths, based in Manchester, would become one of the most influential bands for pop and alternative music in the UK. This wasn’t just for their charismatic lead singer or that the four members of the band were sexy but that the lyrics were heavily infused with serious commentary about modern society.
Even their album titles made news, sending out a message even to those who didn’t buy the album. Memorable titles include “Meat Is Murder” and “The Queen Is Dead”. Songs tended to expose the darker side of life, such as their hit “Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now”, which amusingly paired upbeat music and depressing lyrics.
Post-Smith Life
The Smiths broke up in 1987, but Morrissey went on to a successful solo career. Part of his success was his constant touring. Morrissey got such a reputation for great shows so that even people who would never buy his CDs would clamor for seats to see his shows. A Morrissey tour features not only songs from his solo career, but also hits from The Smiths such as “This Charming Man” and cover versions of classic ballads like “Moon River”.
Morrissey has won a devoted fan base on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean through his refusal to bow to current pop music trends, his clever lyrics and his often controversial opinions about animal rights, ending the English monarchy and his ambiguous sexuality.
