Neil Diamond is the third most successful Billboard Adult Contemporary artist. He has sold over 115 million records worldwide, 48 million in The United States. Known for his sparkly shirts, Neil Diamond has been entertaining fans for over 40 years with his songs about love, longing and freedom. He is not only a singer, but a prolific song-writer and his songs have been covered and made popular by many performers.
The son of immigrant parents, Neil Leslie Diamond was born on January 24th, 1941 in Brooklyn New York. He sang in his high school choir and eventually attended New York University. He had originally intended to go in to medicine in memory of his grandmother who had died of cancer. In his senior year a music company offered him a job as a song-writer for fifty dollars a week.
Neil Diamond first tried performing with a former high school classmate and then as a solo performer. None of the records he made were hits and he returned to writing songs in the legendary Brill building in New York City. His first successful song was “Sunday and Me” done by Jay and the Americans. The Monkees recorded several of his songs including “I’m a Believer” soon after. Elvis Presley as well as many other artists recorded his work. He began performing as an opening act for groups as diverse as Herman’s Hermits and The Who.
Neil diamond toured extensively as a sold-out solo act beginning in the 1970s. His “Hot August Nights” album recorded at The Greek Theater in Los Angeles is one of his most popular albums. It was re-released in 2000 with additional tracks.
In 2008, Neil Diamond donated funds to help people living near Houston who had lost homes to Hurricane Ike. He said he did this to repay a kindness done to him many years ago during his first visit to Houston.
A concert on a Neil Diamond tour can be a wonderful experience. Hearing his songs from the past may make an audience member leave humming a familiar tune. Anyone that gets a chance to see this performer live should seize the opportunity. We hope that you will get the chance.
