More About New York Philharmonic
The New York Philharmonic is considered to be one of America's finest orchestras. It has become famous for its radio and television broadcasts, and the high quality of its musicians and performances. It set a Guinness World Record on December 18th, 2004 by holding its 14,000th concert. The New York Philharmonic is older than any other orchestra in America by nearly forty years. It was founded in 1842 by Ureli Corelli Hill and called The Philharmonic Society of New York. It was only the third philharmonic in America since 1799. The first concert took place on December 7th, 1842 and began with Beethoven's Symphony No. 5. During that time, the orchestra members decided who would conduct and what music they would play. They divided any money they earned among themselves. Some may think the New York Philharmonic plays in Carnegie Hall. However it has not played there for many years. The orchestra played in Carnegie Hall from 1891 to 1962 when it moved to its current home Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center. The hall is scheduled for renovation in 2010. Throughout its history, The New York Philharmonic has had many famous music directors including Gustav Mahler, (1909-1911), Arturo Toscanini, (1928-1936), Leonard Bernstein (1958-1969), and Zubin Mehta (1978-1991). The current music director as of 2009 is Alan Gilbert. The concert master is Glenn Dicterow. In 2008, The New York Philharmonic at the invitation of the North Korean government performed in Pyongyang North Korea. It was the first major American cultural event since the end of the Korean War. The orchestra arranged for the concert to be broadcast over North Korean radio and television. The orchestra played Arirang, a Korean folk song as well as works by George Gershwin and Leonard Bernstein. The current New York Philharmonic tour includes concerts throughout Asia. In addition to concerts at Lincoln Center the orchestra plays concerts in Central Park and also has weekly radio broadcasts. These concerts are specifically designed for children and their families, making the show a good time for both young and old.
