Originally ‘The Rain’, the ‘Oasis’ were formed in Manchester, England, in 1991. The first line-up included Noel Gallagher on lead guitar and vocals, Liam Gallagher on tambourine and vocals, Paul Arthurs on guitar, Paul McGuigan on bass guitar and Tony MacCarroll on drums. At present only Liam Gallagher remains from the previous line-up. Colin Archer as rhythm guitarist, Andy Bell on bass guitar and Chris Sharrock on drums has replaced other members.
Front-man Noel Gallagher’s inspired song writing and managerial discipline set the band towards the path of commercial success. The band had already become well-known in UK club circuits with single releases of songs like ‘Supersonic’ and ‘Live Forever’. Their debut album ‘Defintiely Maybe’, released in 1994, thus entered the charts at number 1 in UK. Never before had a debut album sold so quickly.
Their next commercial success was ‘(What’s the Story) Morning Glory’, released in 1995 with a sale of more than four million copies. The band achieved continued success with albums like ‘Be Here Now’ and ‘The Masterplan’. While following albums never achieved the commercial triumphs of the first three, they were successes in their own right, with ‘Standing on the Shoulder of Giants’ topping UK and Irish charts, ‘Don’t believe in Truth’ reaching #1 in UK and ‘Stop the Clocks attaining #2.
Oasis is part of the British Alternative wave and it’s sub-genre, the Britpop. They have claimed to be largely inspired from The Beatles, whether it’s the controlled musical style or the candid, wry, or hopeful sounding vocals and lyrics. They have cited bands like ‘The Rolling Stones’, ‘The Who’ and ‘Sex Pistols’ to be influences, and have themselves inspired bands like ‘Coldplay’, ‘The Killers’ and ‘Arctic Monkeys’.
The band’s unprecedented success will showcase in the 2010 Guinness Book of World Records as the ‘Longest Top 10 UK Chart Run By a Group’ with successive 22 UK Top 10 hits. They also bagged ‘The Most Successful Act of the Decade’, between 1995 and 2005 by attaining 765 weeks in the top 75 singles and albums charts.
