About Phish

When Phish came on to the scene during the early 90’s, nobody thought that they would be able to survive the burgeoning grunge and hip hop scenes. Well, Phish is still going strong and their current tour is proving to be just as popular as any previous ones.

Phish was formed at the University of Vermont in 1984 when college buddies Trey Anastasio, Mike Gordon, and Jon Fishman started a musical group. The band would also have two other members over the next few years until current member Page McConnell became the final piece in the band that the music public knows as Phish.

Phish did not become known in the mainstream until 1992 when they were a part of the first H.O.R.D.E. Festival in which they were on the bill with other big time acts at the time such as: Blues Traveler, The Spin Doctors, and Widespread Panic. Later on in the decade would see the band make cameos on MTV’s ‘Beavis and Butthead’ and then in 1995 see a huge popularity in the band on the heels of the death of Jerry Garcia that summer. That was also the year that the band’s first big album ‘A Live One’ hit the shelves and was the first certified gold album for the band.

With the death of Jerry Garcia, Deadheads wanted their fill and they got it with Phish. It was during this time that the band became known for its Dead like shows and Dead like ambience. When it comes to jam bands the first two that come to mind are none other than the Grateful Dead and Phish.

Phish have come back again after having gone through a 2009 Summer Tour which saw them reunite for a three nite opener at Hampton Coliseum and play 10 additional shows. The 2009 Fall Tour is underway and the band is also back with a new album ‘Joy’. This is a 13 show tour which also has a three nite gig at Madison Square Garden. It will be a tour that you won’t want to miss.
