Ryan Adams is an alternative country and rock musician who found stardom as the front man for the band Whiskeytown in the 1990s before going solo. It was announced in 2009 that Ryan Adams tour he was on with The Cardinals would be his last.
Ryan Adams was born on November 5, 1974 in Jacksonville, North Carolina. At the age of 8, Adams used his grandmother's typewriter to write poems and short stories. When he was 14, Adams was given an electric guitar by his mother and stepfather, which he quickly learned to play. Shortly after, Adams joined the short lived local band Blank Label. The band recorded a 3 track, 7" disc in 1991 which is less than 7 minutes long. He joined the bands A** and The Lazy Stars briefly before joining The Patty Duke Syndrome, which disbanded in 1994.
In 1995, the singer moved to Raleigh, North Carolina where he formed the band Whiskeytown. The band gained critical acclaim in 1996, and they crossed over into the alternative country genre. Ryan Adams went solo in 2000 and released the album 'Heartbreaker'. The album featured appearances by Emmylou Harris, Kim Richey, and Gillian Welch, and was a critical success.
In 2001, Adams released Gold, which was also well received by critics. That same year, the singer filmed a music video for the song "New York, New York". The video was shot against New York City's skyline and was filmed 4 days prior to the 9/11 attacks. Thanks to heavy rotation of the video on MTV and VH1 following the tragedy, he broke into the mainstream and Ryan Adams shows have been a hot commodity ever since. Adams went on to release 3 more albums before joining the band The Cardinals in 2005-the same year he released his last solo project.
In January 2009 Adams made the announcement he was leaving the music industry after The Cardinals tour ended on March 20. Ryan Adams has found success as a writer, with the poetry book "Infinity Blues". He also has a compilation of poems and short stories entitled "Hello Sunshine" slated for a late 2009 release.
