More About Santana
Santana has been entertaining audiences for decades and the band is still going strong. Their pleasing sounds connect with both young and old fans of good music.
Born in Mexico in 1947 Carlos Santana was destined to become a musician. His father played violin in a mariachi band. By the age of eight, Carlos had learned to play the guitar. He was playing in local bands in Tijuana before his family moved to San Francisco. His father was looking to find work, but this was the move that changed Carlos Santana's life. In San Francisco Carlos got to see many of his hero's including jazz great B.B. King.
Around 1966, with Gregg Rolie, he formed the Santana Blues Band. The band evolved to become "Santana" in about three years. With Rolie on the keyboards, Rod Harper on drums, and Michael Carabello on congas, the band had a sound that caught on with the local crowd. The bass playing of Gus Rodriguez brought it all together.
Performing originally as a Chicago Blues style band, it didn't take long for Carlos Santana's Latin influences to emerge. Their conga, salsa, blues mix was unique, and has stayed with the band through the years. Woodstock was the group's big breakthrough where their performance of "Soul Sacrifice" received a standing ovation.
Over the years the band has changed members quite a few times with a lineup of talented musicians that have moved on to successful careers of their on. Carlos Santana is the only original member, with Gregg Rolie leaving the band in 1972 to form the group "Journey", accompanied by guitarists Neal Schon.
Today a Santana tour travels with an entourage of more than ten performers on stage. The group combines talents to give an awe-inspiring performance. The Latin influenced sounds of Santana have not been duplicated by any other band. They are unmistakable and you don't have to ask, "who is that?" when Santana takes the stage.
The band never gives anything but the best of performances and Carlos Santana hasn't even begun to slow down.
