More About Styx

Styx established itself as one of most influential rock bands ever to grace the stage. Styx was formed in 1961 by twin brothers John (drums) and Chuck Panozzo (bass) who hailed from the south side of Chicago. They were joined by accordion/keyboard player Dennis DeYoung. In 1964 they were known as the 'Tradewinds', a year later the 'TW4'. During 1969 and 70 they were joined by guitarist's James Young and John Curulewski. In the early 70's the band signed their first record deal with Wooden Nickel Records they changed their name to 'Styx'. The name really had nothing to do with a fascination for Greek mythology. Deyoung was quoted as saying, 'It was the only one none of us hated'. The band recorded 4 albums on the Wooden Nickel label. Their album 'Styx II' (recorded in 1973) produced the song 'Lady'. After repeated request for the song on a local radio station, WLS in Chicago, the song became a top 10 hit and Styx II went gold 2 years after it was recorded. In 1975 Curulewski abruptly left and Tommy Shaw (guitarist, songwriter and vocals) was brought on after the band recorded the album 'Equinox'. The band members were finally solidified; Dennis DeYoung, James Young, John and Chuck Panozzo and Tommy Shaw. For 9 years the group would produce mutli-platinum rock albums: Crystal Ball, The Grand Illusion, Pieces of Eight, Corner Stone, Paradise Theater and Kilroy Was Here (their contribution to rock opera). Multi platinum singles: 'Come Sail Away', 'Renegade', DeYoung's powerhouse ballad 'Babe', 'The Best of Times', Shaw's 'Too Much Time on My Hands' and 'Don't let it End'. After attempts at solo careers, DeYoung recorded 2 more albums with the band, 'Edge of the Century' and 'Brave New World'. He officially left the band in 1999. Shaw returned in 1995, and today he, James Young, and Chuck Panozzo are now joined by a new line up of members. The band continues to tour and pack venues where ever they play. They are currently on tour and playing in a city near you. Experience Styx for yourself! You will not be disappointed!
