More About Tom Jones
Tom Jones has sold over 100 million records. Since 1965 he has been rocking the house and thrilling the ladies. His Elvis-like moves and booming voice are as exciting today as they were then. Tom Jones was born Tom Woodward, the son of a coal miner. He was born in Wales in 1940. Though many think of him as Welsh, most of his family was English. The only family member who was Welsh was his mother's father. He sang in his school choir and at family gatherings. In his late teens, he quit school and held odd jobs including that of a traveling vacuum cleaner salesman. While singing with a group called Tommy Scott and The Senators in 1964, he met Gordon Mills, who became his agent. Mills was responsible for changing Tom Woodward's name to Tom Jones. His first big single was 'It's Not Unusual' in 1965 which was partially written by Mills. At first the BBC refused to play the song. Tom Jones received the Grammy award for Best New Artist in 1965. Some of his early hits include, 'Delilah', 'The Green Green Grass of Home', and 'Help Yourself'. When he appeared in Las Vegas, women attracted by his raw charm threw there hotel room keys and their underwear on stage. He had two television shows 1 which ran from 1969 through 1971 called 'This Is Tom Jones', and another 'The Tom Jones Show' which was on from 1980-1981. He continued to perform throughout the 80s and 90s and was invited by President Bill Clinton to help welcome the new millennium in 1999. On March 29th, 2006 Tom Jones became Sir Tom Jones. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace in London. Today, Tom Jones entertains with the same intense energy and talent which he brought to fans in 1965. A Tom Jones concert means the same thing to fans today as they did 40 years ago. A Tom Jones tour might consist of appearances in The United States, Canada, and Europe.
