In 1997, Larry Rothschild became the team’s first manager. The team obtained thirty five players in the draft. Those players included Wade Boggs and Kevin Stocker. The team played its first game against the Detroit Tigers at Tropicana Field. Almost fifty thousand people attended the first game. Wade Boggs was the first to hit a home run in team history and even though they lost the game, they were off to a good start. In 1999, Wade Boggs made history when he hit his 3000th career hit, which was a home run, the only player to ever do so. Boggs retired in 2001 and had his number retired. Ironically, he spent more time with the Yankees and they never hung up his jersey. In 2005, he was inducted into the MLB Hall of Fame. The Tampa Bay Rays just won their first division title in 2008, entered the playoffs for the first time, and were qualified for the World Series.
