About Kansas City Royals
Named in honor of The American Royal, a renowned stock show held annually in Kansas City, the Royals were formed as an expansion team in 1969 by Ewing Kauffman, a prominent Kansas City businessman. They have played at Kauffman Stadium, named for the late owner, since 1973. Although it is an older stadium, it just completed a $250 million renovation in July 2009. Located in the Truman Sports complex next to the Chiefs Arrowhead Stadium, Kauffman Stadium, or The K as it is sometimes known, is widely regarded as one of the premier examples of a well-designed stadium. It is one of only two stadiums in the league specifically designed for baseball games that has never been repurposed for multiple sports.
Kauffman Stadium’s most famous feature is the fountain display behind the right field. The display features constantly flowing waterfalls, with fountains bursting before and after the game, as well as between innings. Although the stadium uses AstroTurf, the field was maintained by legendary groundskeeper George Toma for the majority of his career.
The Kansas City Royals main rivals are the Chicago White Sox, the Cleveland Indians, Minnesota Twins, and the Detroit Tigers. Now that interleague play is in place, they also have expanded their rivalry with the St. Louis Cardinals, which stems from the 1985 World Series which the Royals won. If you can, try to catch one of these games, sure to provide plenty of excitement. Really, though, any game will be enjoyable, even if the Royals don’t win!
