About Seattle Mariners

Baseball took the city of Seattle by storm when the Mariners first came into the city in 1977. The team played its first game on April 6, 1977 to a sold-out crowd of 57,762 at the now-defunct Kingdome. In 1999, the Mariners built the new and innovative Safeco Field. The Mariners have certainly had their share of outstanding baseball moments. One of the team’s most memorable seasons came in 1995 when they sneaked into the playoffs and then defeated the Yankees in dramatic fashion. Designated hitter Edgar Martinez hit a game-winning double that also clinched the series for the Mariners and sent them farther than they’d ever been into the postseason. In 2001, the addition of Japanese sensation Ichiro Suzuki and a career season by power-hitting second baseman Bret Boone helped the Mariners tie the record for most wins in a season with 116.
