The Aarons 499 is one of four restrictor plate races on the NASCAR circuit and is famous for its late race, hair raising, wheel-to-wheel action. As a matter of fact it is the 1997 version of the Aarons 499 that is recorded as the fastest NASCAR race run as Mark Martin won with an average speed of 188.354 mph. This race was also the first one run at Talladega that did not have one single caution flag. It was here in 1987 when Bobby Allison’s horrific crash brought on the advent of the restrictor plate for the 1988 season.
