This was because the team came to Tennessee from Houston, Texas. They were known in Houston as the Houston Oilers, a team that was a charter member of the original American Football League (AFL) in 1960. It was ruled such by the officials on the field, it was shown later—via computer analysis—to have been a legitimate lateral pass. The roar that went up from Titans fans when Dyson broke away and sped down the field for a touchdown could be heard for miles outside the stadium. Some in hospitals at the time were said to have heard the roar before they saw the play develop on television.
