About Southern 500
Located in the small town of Darlington, South Carolina, the Darlington Raceway is one of the oldest tracks in all of NASCAR, and it is known for hosting some of the most exciting races in the world. The race has been won a handful of times by each of the great NASCAR names, including Dale Earnhardt, Richard Petty, Jeff Gordon, and David Pearson, who owns the record for most career victories at the track. Darlington used to host two races each year, but the track is now left with only its most famous race, the Southern 500.
The race is always action packed because of the configuration of the track at Darlington. It is an oval-shaped track, but one side is narrower than the other because of space limitations when the track was first built. What that means is that drivers have to be prepared for a day full of challenges when racing in the Southern 500, and they are not always on top of their game. The track is known for its “stripes” that come on the freshly painted white walls, as countless drivers bang into the barriers when they attempt to take the turns a little bit too quickly.
