About Minnesota Timberwolves

The Timberwolves joined the NBA in 1989 along with three other expansion franchises, the Orlando Magic, Miami Heat, and Charlotte Hornets. Minnesota plays all its home games at the Target Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Target Center has been their home for every season except their first when they played at the Metrodome while they awaited the completion of Target Center.

The Timberwolves are a franchise very much identified by an era of great play sandwiched in-between mediocrity. Upon joining the league for the 1989/90 season the Timberwolves struggled for wins, but in 1995 that all began to change. In the 1995 NBA Draft, the Timberwolves selected Kevin Garnett with their first pick. That same season Flip Saunders arrived and the two ushered in an era of success for Minnesota. Kevin Garnett became the face of the franchise and the pillar upon which their future success would be built. Prior to Garnett and Saunders’ arrival, the Timberwolves had not had a winning season or a winning coach. Starting with the 1996/97 season the pair led Minnesota to the playoffs eight seasons in a row culminating in a trip to the Western Conference finals in 2003/04.

Since then the team has been broken apart piece by piece. Flip Saunders was fired by Vice President of Basketball Operations Kevin McHale during the 2004/05 season, replaced on the bench by McHale himself. Two years later in 2007, the Timberwolves traded away the face of the franchise, Kevin Garnett, to the Boston Celtics. Dwayne Casey and Randy Wittman came through in the meantime as coaches, with McHale making another appearance as coach after relieving Wittman. This offseason though the Timberwolves have fully committed to their rebuilding process and more drastic changes have been made. McHale was fired as coach and as VP of Basketball Operations. David Kahn replaced McHale in the front office and in August the team hired long time Phil Jackson assistant Kurt Rambis to help turn their franchise around.

Minnesota Timberwolves tickets have been easy to come by the last few seasons as the team’s performance has lagged. During the first month of the 2009/10 season the Timberwolves will welcome some tough competition to the Target Center. Milwaukee, Toronto, Chicago, New Jersey, and Cleveland are all on the Timberwolves schedule in the first month of the season. For more on Minnesota Timberwolves’ tickets, check out our website.
