The Dallas Cowboys turned in an impressive preseason debut in their new home Friday night, indicating that Dallas Cowboys games at Cowboys Stadium may indeed be worth the hefty price tag Jerry Jones paid for what is unquestionably the new Mecca for football fans and arena junkies everywhere. The decisive 30-10 victory over the Tennessee Titans proved that indeed the players are ready to forget the disappointing performance turned in last season, and offensive coordinator Jason Garrett still has a significant amount of weapons in his arsenal. The overall performance on both sides of the ball remained dominant over a Titan team that seemed to never get into any sort of positive groove, including a rookie punter who managed to hit the ninety foot high scoreboard with ease, resulting in an interesting flurry of activity amongst confused officials who had to quickly consult the league rules on "do-overs". However, fans still may have reasons for concern as the team moves into the regular season. Although the cost of Dallas Cowboys tickets are higher than when the games took place at Texas Stadium, it became obvious relatively early in the game that old habits may still die hard, even when they are in a shiny new package.
Despite the team's expulsion of the so called "bad apples" during the off-season, including famed wideout Terrell Owens, troubled corner Adam "Pacman" Jones, and the perpetually disgruntled Greg Ellis, the postmortems included familiar ghosts of last season. Criticism of special teams was easily justifiable, as Miles Austin's impressive opening kickoff return was called back on a holding penalty, and the usually reliable kicker Nick Folk missed a 49 yard field goal. Personal foul penalties seemed to be indicative of the poor discipline and me-first attitudes that Dallas Cowboys beleaguered head coach Wade Phillips promised to improve after last season's disappointing 9-7 performance. Although quarterback Tony Romo turned in two impressive offensive efforts, including a single drive that took almost an entire quarter followed by an impressive "hurry-up" drive which resulted in and additional seven points before the end of the first half, the inconsistent offensive performance from last year is still very much on the mind of those who have spent a small fortune on Cowboys Stadium tickets. Who knows what the future holds for the Dallas Cowboys but one thing is for sure; Texans will always love them and eventually they will dominate the NFL again.
