This was because the team came to Tennessee from Houston, Texas. They were known in Houston as the Houston Oilers, a team that was a charter member of the original American Football League (AFL) in 1960. The team went to Nashville, after two seasons in Memphis as the Tennessee Oilers, to play in what is now known as LP Field.
One of the most memorable—and hotly debated—moments of Tennessee Titans and NFL history is known as the Music City Miracle. On June 8, 2000 the Titans and the Buffalo Bills faced each other for a shot at the division playoffs. In the Wild Card game The Titans were set to receive the kick-off. Lorenzo Neal, of the Titans, received the kickoff and handed the ball off to tight end Frank Wycheck, who then threw a lateral pass to Kevin Dyson who ran the field and scored a 75 yard touchdown in the last second of the game. The conflict comes about when it was questioned that he pass was a legitimate lateral pass. It was ruled such by the officials on the field, it was shown later—via computer analysis—to have been a legitimate lateral pass. The roar that went up from Titans fans when Dyson broke away and sped down the field for a touchdown could be heard for miles outside the stadium. Some in hospitals at the time were said to have heard the roar before they saw the play develop on television.
