A part of the Sprint Cup Series, the 2009 Pocono 500 race was won by Denny Hamlin with a second place finish by Juan Montoya. The track, in Long Pond, Pennsylvania, was completed in 1968 with a total distance of 2.5 miles. Nicknamed "The Tricky Triangle" for its tri-oval shape, there is room for nearly 77,000 screaming fans in the grandstand. In 1990, the Mattioli family, owners of the Pocono Raceway, began a complete makeover that took nearly ten years. Upon its completion, the new and improved site boasts a completely rebuilt track and infield with 150 motor home sites. The Paddock Area is brand new and only 56' from the cars. The Midway is clean and relaxing with freshly planted blue spruce trees and numerous picnic tables and gazebos placed with care. The Pocono Raceway also recently "went green" with the installation of a three megawatt solar farm, which will power all of the raceway's energy.
Not only can you watch the race when you are here, but the track itself is available for rental and you can take driving courses as well. With six different course configurations, you can choose the length and difficulty of your own personal race. Located within two hours of both Philadelphia and New York City, the Pocono Raceway is easy to access from the east coast and is only minutes south of Interstate 80.
When you visit the track, be sure to stay at the recently opened "The Village at Pocono" for luxurious accommodations. The clubhouse boasts a game room and exercise room, an indoor aquatic center, as well as a theater room and his and hers locker rooms. Outside, you'll be delighted to find bocce, tennis and basketball, and a playground for the little ones.
