More About Arizona Cardinals
The name came from the Normal Park, which was located on Racine Avenue in Chicago. In 1901, they started wearing maroon colored shirts. The colors had actually faded, leading their founder Chris O'Brien to say, "That's not maroon, it's cardinal red!', the team then became known as the Racine Cardinals. The team broke-up in 1906 mainly because of lack of local championship but came together in 1913. They had to stop playing for again in 1918 because of World War I. They started operations later that year.
In 1920, the team evolved into a licensed member of the NFL. The Cardinals and the Bears are the only licensed teams of the NFL who are still in continuance. The individual tracking the time at the first league conference, unfamiliar with the shading of Chicago football, documented the Cardinals as from Racine, Wisconsin. They became the Chicago Cardinals in 1922.
In the first six years of the NFL's continuance, the Bears-Cardinals games had a big impact on the league championship four times. The Bears and Cardinals each acquired one title during that span. The Bears almost cost the Cardinals their title, the Cardinals almost cost the Bears their title and but for the Cardinals stubbornness against the Bears, the Bears probably would have won two others. The Bears were such a superior team against each person, but the Cardinals in those days beat them only two times and no other team in the NFL beat the Bears more than one time over that whole six-year span., except for the Cardinals.
The legend is that the Cardinals competed against the Chicago Tigers in 1920, with the loser being compelled to leave town. This has never been established, the Tigers did brake-up after one season. The Cardinals have since been playing at the Cardinals first won their NFL championship in 1925, ending the season with a documented record of 11-2-1. In an arguable judgment by the NFL, the Pottsville Maroons, the winning team, had their franchise taken away for not following the league rights of the Frankford Yellow Jackets. So the Cardinals won the 1925 title by defect.
It wasn't until the 80's that the Cardinal moved to Arizona and changed their name to the Arizona Cardinals. The Cardinal had a run of success in the late 90's. The Arizona Cardinals games are played at the University of Phoenix stadium. The Cardinals won their first home playoff game this last January, 2009. It was the first time in sixty years that The University of Phoenix Stadium tickets were sold out.
