The rock band Heart did not start out with the Wilson sisters, Ann and Nancy. The band originated in Bothell, Washington in 1967 when Steve Fossen and Roger Fisher formed a group called Army. By 1979 they had a new lineup and change their name to White Heart. During 1970 the band dropped the “White” and became “Heart”. The group went through another change in band members and became known as Hocus Pocus with Ann Wilson joining the band. The band migrated to Canada and finally settled on the name Heart in 1973. Ann’s sister Nancy joined in 1974. Heart was Ann Wilson (Vocals), Nancy Wilson (guitar), Roger Fisher (guitar), Steve Fossen (Bass), John Hannah (Keyboards) and Brian Johnstone (Drums). By 1975 Howard Leese, a guitarist and keyboard player, had become a full fledge member of the group. Hannah and Johnstone had departed sometime earlier. Producer Mike Flicker and Leese insisted the band make a demo. In 1975 the band recorded the album “Dreamboat Annie” that got the attention of executives at Mushroom Records in Vancouver. Mike DeRoiser, a session musician on “Dreamboat Annie” became the drummer for the band. “Dreamboat Annie went on to sell over 1 million copies (a combination of Canadian and US sales) and produced hits “Crazy on You” and “Magic Man”. In 1977 after returning to the states Heart released “Little Queen” on CBS/Portrait Records. They had another multi-million seller on their hands and the memorable hit single “Barracuda”, which became their signature song, and proof that Heart’s sound of classic rock is pure and unadulterated. Soon after, the double-platinum “Dog and Butterfly” was released in late 1978. Roger Fisher departed in 1979, and the band released “Bebe Le Strange” in 1980 which produced the single, “Tell it Like it Is”. In 1985 Heart had another multi-million seller with the self titled “Heart”. The singles “What About Love”, “Never”, “These Dreams and “Nothin’ at All” were all top 10 hits. Fossen and DeRoiser left in 82’. Heart’s band members presently are Craig Bartok (guitar), Debbie Shair (keyboards/synthesizer), Ric Markmann (bass), Nancy Wilson (lead guitar) and Ann Wilson (vocals).
