More About Golden State Warriors
They were destined for greatness in the beginning and won the Basketball Association of America championship that season by defeating the Chicago Stags.
Change has been rife in the franchise's history. In 1949, the BAA became the NBA and in 1951, Gottlieb bought the team. After a few years of uneventful playing, history was made when the team signed Wilt 'The Stilt' Chamberlain. Records began to be broken immediately and in 1962, Chamberlain shattered the single-game scoring record with 100 points against the New York Knicks.
In 1962, The Philadelphia Warrior moved to the San Francisco bay area when the franchise was purchased by Franklin Mieuli. They played their early games at the Cow Palace in Daly City, but also played on occasion in Oakland and San Jose. The San Francisco Warriors won the Western Division in 1963-64. The next year they would draft Rick Barry who was named Rookie of the Year. He led the team to the finals in the 1966-67 season, the same year the team began playing at Oracle Arena.
The San Francisco Warriors officially became the Golden State Warriors in 1971 and won the championship in 1975 in what was considered the greatest upset in NBA history. Sadly, Golden State Warriors games at ORACLE Arena fell in popularity after that until 1987 when one of the greatest games of NBA history was played by Golden State against Magic Johnson's Los Angeles Lakers in the Western Conference Semifinals. They remained contenders up until 1995 when key players, Webber, Sprewell, and Nelson left the team.
The Golden State Warriors have been top contenders now since 2004 when Chris Mullen began rebuilding the team and their first playoff game in 13 years came in 2007. Larry Riley is now the GM of the team and Golden State Warriors basketball tickets are on sale at our website. Buy now.
