About Los Angeles Lakers

The team holds several NBA records to date. They hold the record for most wins and the highest winning percentage. They also hold the record for being in the NBA finals most often.

Kobe Bryant will be returning to the team this year. Lamar Odom just signed a 4 year contract to play with the Lakers. Shannon Brown has also been resigned. Kobe Bryant won the NBA finals MVP award in 2009. That was a career first for him.

The Lakers franchise was bought in 1946. They were originally based in Detroit, Michigan, but moved the team to Minneapolis, Minnesota to play in the 1947 season. This is how they picked up their name, the Lakers, because of Minnesota’s nickname, the state of 10,000 lakes. They won 5 championships, before they were transferred to Los Angeles in the 1960-1961 season. The Lakers popularity skyrocketed in the 1980s. They were on a winning streak and won the division title 7 years in a row. Players such as Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul Jabar and James Worthy helped them to win 5 championships. In early 2000s Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal helped lead the Lakers to another 3 championships.

Los Angeles Lakers games at the Staples Center, are a magnet for celebrities. Many celebrities like Jack Nicholson, hold season tickets. Their TV ratings are higher than any other basketball team. Their home games were sold out for the 2007-2008 season. Forbes magazine has said that the franchise is the 2nd most valuable team in the United States. The New York Knicks are the 1st.

The Los Angeles Lakers schedule will kick off on October 7th with a game against the Golden State Warriors in Anaheim.
