More About San Francisco 49ers
During the 1980s the 49ers were THE franchise in football and won four Super Bowl titles over the course of the decade. Some of football's most legendary names built the 49ers up to what they are today. Jerry Rice, Ronnie Lot, Joe Montana, and Steve Young all led the 49ers to Super Bowl victory in the 1980s and 1990s.
Since 1971 the 49ers have called Candlestick Park their home. Originally designed as the home for MLB's San Francisco Giants, Candlestick offers some obstructed view seats for football. During the 80s and 90s this didn't seem to matter as tickets to games were the hottest thing in town. If you want tickets to a 49ers game, you should buy them direct from our site.
During the 1980s, head coach Bill Walsh and QB Joe Montana led the 49ers from NFL mediocrity to NFL greatness. Walsh, consider the father of the West Coast offense, used his scheme to befuddle opponents and bring the 49ers to the top of the NFL. The franchise won its first Super Bowl title in 1981. The 49ers found themselves back in the Super Bowl in 1984, defeating the Miami Dolphins for the franchise's second Super Bowl title. Back to back titles in 1988 and 1989 would see the 49ers finish the decade as the most dominant franchise in football, with four titles in eight seasons.
Recent years have not been so kind to the 49ers. As their old heroes began to retire and depart from San Francisco, they left behind gaps that were never filled and the team suffered. In the course of four seasons, the 49ers lost some of their best talent and are just now recovering. Quarterback Steve Young left in 1999, wide receiver Jerry Rice in 2000, and wide receiver Terrell Owens in 2003. The 49ers have not made the playoffs since the 2002 season.
All is not lost in San Francisco though. Several up and down seasons are behind them and the team has a franchise player in running back Frank Gore. The team has pieces in place to continue building upon its success and turn things around for a franchise still considered one of the best all time in the NFL. During the 2009 NFL season the 49ers will host eight home games at Candlestick Park. Seattle, St. Louis, Atlanta, Tennessee, Chicago, Jacksonville, Arizona, and Detroit will all visit Candlestick in 2009.
