Ultimate Fighting Championship began in Denver, Colorado in 1993. UFC is a US based mixed martial arts organization inspired by Brazilian vale tudo. UFC’s early years were rocky and their following was small and cult like. The sport initially advertised itself as a no holds barred fighting event. The goal of the fledgling UFC was to find the world’s best fighters regardless of technique. To this day, fighters compete against each other with styles varying from boxing, kickboxing, and wrestling to karate and jiu jitsu. Early bouts were extremely violent and brutal, drawing the ire of many in the country including lawmakers. A market existed however for this sport, and the UFC reinvented itself. Slowly the group accepted stricter rules for fights and began to gain sanction from State Athletic Commissions.
Today UFC is one of the world’s most popular, legitimate sporting events. Once only popular on pay per view, the UFC saves its signature events for PPV and is aired on a weekly basis on SpikeTV in the US and Canada on ESPN in the United Kingdom. UFC tickets are fast becoming a hot commodity as the sport’s exposure increases. The UFC’s current organization operates with five weight classes including lightweight, welterweight, middleweight, light heavyweight, and heavyweight. The current champions of each weight class are, in order, BJ Penn (USA), Georges St-Pierre (CAN), Anderson Silva (BRA), Lyoto Machida (BRA), and Brock Lesnar (USA).
As the popularity of UFC has expanded, Ultimate Fighting Championship tickets have become more expensive and harder to find. As more and more fans are drawn to the sport, this trend continues upward. The power of the media however has had a positive influence on the sport as more and more events are televised and awareness of events increases. UFC has many events each year, more so than other traditional sports, for fans to find tickets to. For more information on tickets to UFC events, check out our website.
