A Chorus Line on Broadway was a huge hit for years. Show songs and Bob Fosse choreography are stunning. One character, a dancer named Cassie, is among eighteen "main" characters whose dance future plays out in this production, with Zach the indifferent director and assistant, Larry. Chorus Line is ingeniously staged around real life situations dancers know well: the dreaded, audition. Yet, in this production, the book authors, James Kirkwood and Nicholas Dante, weave a seamless story of how these dancers' personal lives and their stage live mesh into one.
The Central Theme of A Chorus Line
Though this production can't really be broken down into typical Acts, given the sequence of the script, each dancer is given a focus that manages to form a central theme: The need to perform, to be a working professional dancer and to make it through the grueling, oftentimes painful phase of the audition process. A Chorus line is also famous for the final scene when the chorus does a quick change to Top Hat and Tails costumes in less than a split second.
