This musical was created by John Kander, Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse in 1975, and is based on a play of the same name written in 1926 by Maurine Dallas Watkins. Watkins was a reporter, and she based the show on true stories of crime that she had reported upon. The musical was so successful that it was made into a movie in 2002 that won Best Picture that year at the Academy Awards.
The two main characters are Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly. Roxie Hart, a married woman, murders her lover, while Velma Kelly kills her sister and husband when she finds the two in bed together. Both women meet up in prison and have the same slick attorney, Billy Flynn. The trio dances and sings with a large accompanying cast while manipulating the media, public and judicial system.
