The musical's book and lyrics are written by Steven Sater and the music is written by Duncan Sheik. Spring Awakening won eight Tony Awards in 2007, including best musical, best book of a musical and best original score. It also won the Grammy for best musical show album in 2008.
Spring Awakening is set in late nineteenth century Germany and is about teenagers who are just discovering their sexuality. The main characters are Wendla and Melchior, two teenagers who fall in love and begin a sexual relationship, despite their parents insisting they are too young to learn anything about love and sex. The musical also tells the stories, some tragic, of several of Melchior and Wendla's friends, such as Moritz and Ilse. This heart-wrenching story deals with several serious themes like sex, rape, abortion, child abuse, and suicide.
Unfortunately, this wonderful show closed on Broadway in January 2009, so you can no longer see a Spring Awakening Broadway performance in New York, but you can still see the touring production. Spring Awakening shows can be seen all over the country in the Broadway touring production and soon in regional theatres as well. Tickets to Spring Awakening can be purchased on our website or by phone. Please take time to book your tickets now as the good seating for most shows sells relatively quick.
