There are five main characters, two fathers, Hucklebee and Bellomy, Hucklebee's son and Luisa, Bellomy's daughter and El Gallo, the narrator and bandit. Three other characters are Henry, the old actor, Mortimer, the man pretending to be an American Indian who dies and the Mute, who actually represents the Wall. The fathers engage in reverse psychology: They build a wall to keep their children apart, hoping they'll do what their fathers' forbid and fall in love.
In Act I, a tableau is created when Matt who lives next door to Luisa, sing about their hopes and dreams and Matt confesses his love for Luisa. Hucklebee plans a fake "kidnapping" of Luisa in collusion with the bandit, El Gallo.
In Act II, El Gallo weaves magic, turning night into day. All that previously transpired becomes convoluted for the fathers, Matt and Luisa. The two lovers quarrel. Matt is beaten by Henry and Mortimer. Luisa prepares to leave with El Gallo. Peace and calm turns to chaos for the two. Matt discovers El Gallo's abandonment of Luisa. Matt comforts Luisa and they fall in love again.
