About West Side Story
West Side Story takes place in the late 1950’s, when street gangs in New York City were prevalent. The main characters are two lovers, Maria and Tony. Supporting characters are Bernardo and Anita, along with two gangs, “The Sharks” and “The Jets”. The Sharks, Puerto Ricans and the Jets, mostly Americans of various cultural backgrounds compete for local turf. Tony, a former Jet member, and Riff, current Jet gang leader are best friends. Bernardo, leader of the Sharks, takes responsibility for the protection of his sister, Maria who has just arrived in the city from their native Puerto Rico. The two rival gangs seek to control their turf even as Maria and Tony, who meet at a dance at a local gym, fall in love and are immediately separated by Bernardo.
In the first and second acts of West Side Story, the gangs engage themselves in rivalry and a planned gang fight, punctuated by a closer look at the lovers, Maria and Tony, address their cultural differences. Act III and IV culminates in a fatal gang fight, punctuating the hatred between the rival gangs and fatal separation of Maria and Tony.
