Atlanta Motor Speedway is a 1.54 mile oval race track located in Hampton, Georgia. Known as one of the fastest among NASCAR’s racing venues, Atlanta Motor Speedway has a seating capacity of just over 125,000. The track originally opened in 1960 and then underwent extensive renovations in 1997 to take on the current configuration known as quad-oval.
Atlanta Motor Speedway is best known for hosting two NASCAR Sprint Cup races events each year with race weekends taking place in March and again on Labor Day weekend. Among NASCAR fans it is now known as one of the fastest tracks to host a night race. Movie buffs may also recognize this venue from the opening scenes of Smokey and the Bandit II which were filmed on location.
The speedway has historically hosted racing events for the USAC Championship, CART Championship, and IRL Indy Car Series. Additional tracks featured include a 2.5 mile road course and quarter-mile track. On most Friday nights of the year, the pit road is transformed into a 1/8th mile drag racing venue that is open to the public. Would be dragsters go head to head at these events without the benefit of starting lights or timing instruments. Atlanta Motor Speedway was chosen to host the Countryfest concert in 1996 and, more recently, Duke Fest 2008.
