Home to the “Greatest Spectacle in Racing,” Indianapolis Motor Speedway was opened in 1909, and was the first track in incorporate the word “Speedway.” Located in Speedway, Indiana, it is the largest sports complex in the world, with a permanent capacity of 257,000 and infield seating of over 140,000 for a total of approximately 400,000 spectators. The track is only auto racing facility with the designation of National Historic Landmark.
Indianapolis Motor Speedway is a 2.5-mile Superspeedway that is nearly rectangular in shape; there is also a Grand Prix road course and a motorcycle course. The grounds also feature the “Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum”, as well as the “Brickyard Crossing Golf Resort.”
Indianapolis Motor Speedway currently features the Indianapolis 500 as its flagship race. Held on Memorial Day weekend every year, the Indy 500 brings out some of the most talented open-wheel race car drivers in the world, all looking for a chance to sip milk in Victory Lane. NASCAR’s Sprint Cup series was added in 1994, with the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard (also known as the Brickyard 400) running each year. In 2008, the Speedway added a MotoGP motorcycle event, the Red Bull Indianapolis GP. The track has also hosted Formula One and the International Race of Champions (IROC series) in the past.
