More Phoenix International Raceway Information
Located in scenic Avondale, Arizona, Phoenix International Raceway has a long and exciting history. Originally opened in January, 1964, this major racing venue is the home of many firsts in the NASCAR story. From the win of the legendary A. J. Foyt on the track’s first oval course race in March of 1964, to the Checker O’Reilly Auto Parts 500 in November, 2008, when Jimmie Johnson became the first driver in PIR history to win three Sprint Cup Series races, Phoenix International Raceway consistently leads the way in offering exciting racing.
Until March of 2005, all contests at PIR took place during daylight hours. Once lights were installed, it changed the entire experience of racing at the park. With lights which are equal to those of 10,357 blocks of residential street lighting, racing was no longer relegated to the schedule of the setting sun. New groups of fans who were previously unable to attend the daytime activities were suddenly flocking to participate.
PIR’s family-friendly atmosphere lends itself perfectly to the NASCAR tradition. The beautiful scenery of the vast Sonoran Desert and the balmy winter climate of Phoenix’s southwest valley allow for enjoyable racing and tailgating during winter months when most other venues are shut down by seasonal weather. Both the local fan base and the visiting enthusiasts virtually ensure an exciting and prosperous future for PIR.
