More Richmond International Raceway Information
Richmond International Raceway, located just outside of Richmond, Virginia, is a 3/4-mile “D-shaped” track with a seating capacity of over 112,000 people. Known as “America’s Premier Short Track,” Richmond does all of its racing “under the lights.” The track is part of the Richmond Raceway Complex, a 1,000 acres multi-use facility.
Opened in 1946, Richmond International Raceway was originally a 1/2-mile dirt track. It was later paved, expanded to 0.542-miles, then expanded to the 3/4-mile track they race on today. The track hosts two NASCAR Sprint Cup weekends each year, which also feature the Nationwide Series. The final race at Richmond each year is the “Race to Make the Chase,” the final race before the Chase for the Sprint Cup begins. The track has also hosted the IndyCar Series and the United States Auto Club (USAC) Silver Crown and Sprint Series.
The Richmond Raceway Complex also hosts a number of special events throughout the year. The Complex, which features six permanent buildings and over 160,000 square feet of exhibition space, hosts boat shows, home and garden shows, sports card shows, sporting goods shows, equipment and outdoor expos, as well as a number of outdoor summer festivals and concerts by national recording acts.
