More Talladega Superspeedway Information
Talladega Superspeedway is located in Eastaboga Alabama. It sits next to the International Motorsports Hall of Fame. Ground was broken on the speedway on May 23, 1968 and officially opened over a year later on September 13, 1969. The speedway was built in place of the vacated Anniston Army Airfield. The track is over two miles long and has a seating capacity of 175,000. The total price tag of construction for Talladega Superspeedway was roughly $4 million dollars. The track underwent a major face lift in 2006 when the pavement of the racing surface was re-constructed.
The very first race at the track was won by Richard Brickhouse on September 14, 1969. Many other drivers have also had their very first career win at Talladega Superspeedway like Dick Brooks, Phil Parsons, and Brian Vickers. Over the years many records have been set and broken at Talladega. The fastest recorded time by a NASCAR stock car was clocked on June 9, 2004 with a speed of 216 miles per hour by driver Rusty Wallace. In fact, speeds of over 200 mph are very common at Talladega. The Superspeedway hosts two Sprint Cup Series races and one National Series race every year. The Birmingham Ultimate Disc Association Mud Bowl is also an annual event at the speedway.
